Is the Nepal-India relations similar to Vietnam-China relations?
Homer Pang I find an interesting circle in Chinese history. When China was busy with wars against its northern neighbors, Vietnamese would steal some lands from China. After finishing the war in the north, China usually had to start extra wars in the south to get those lands back. This circle actually had been seen several times in history. But right now it is just a little more complicate for China to get back the lands stolen by Viet when China was dealing with the threaten from the USSR, since Viet have someone strong enough to back them up.
I think India is lucky…at least Nepol would never try to invade India. Ngô Xuân K What do you think of the relationship between China and Vietnam? It’s complicated. China and Vietnam enjoy fast growing bilateral trade and cooperation in many fields but they also disagree on many things. If you have been following the news about Vietnam for the last few days, you most probably have heard (from the BBC) that China is pushing Vietnam to abandon the oil project Block 07/03 off Vietnamese shore.
What you have probably missed are similar blocks nearby like Lan Tay and Lan Do. All have been met with Chinese pressure since the begng but nevertheless went through. Block 07/03 is facing the same situation. The Blue Whale (Ca Voi Xanh) project between PetroVietnam and ExxonMobil will be an even more interesting case due to its sensitive location. Vietnam has been inviting countries to explore oil in its EEZ, including Russia, UK, India and now Italy. Anonymous Short Answer: No Long Answer: In many ways, it is like China-Pak relationship, but still not entirely. 1..China and Pak have no ethnic/cultual connect. China treats Pak as their ‘step little brother’ and Pak Govt happily accept that fact. They sit in China’s lap. 1. 2. people of Pak have no other option left but to accept this fact but to take whatever china throws at them just because they are economically heavily depend on China. Plus, their big fat ego does not allow them to bend before their actual big brother - India. 2. 3. However the people of Pak is not completely in romance with China. Only their Govt is. 3. As for Nepal, they have strong cultural and economic ties and share a common ethnic. They have open border. Both citizens are allowed to visit, live and work in both countries without any visa or work permit. Infact there are around 40k Nepalese serving in Indian army. You would not hear that kind of friendship anywhere else in the world very often. India considers Nepal as their little brother for some reason. Both Nepalese people and their DO NOT like it. They want India to treat them as equel. Nepal heavily depends on India for its day today trade as it is a land locked country. But, unlike Pakistan Nepal has another option. ie to side with China to get some leverages from them and possibly intimidate India since China is India’s rival (in India’s eyes) |
